This collection deals with a wide-range of Machir family activities, with the bulk of the collection written between 1856-1861. Family members and friends that wrote to Machir include: Thomas T. January, A.S. Wilson, and John M. January. These letters document slave- holding activities in Kentucky and Missouri, the social, economic, and political climates in these states prior to the Civil War. Another segment of the collection pertains to land grants and land sales, to the lumber and coal industries, and to live stock. Some of the letters deal with military affairs.
